11-28-2011: America Counts Applications
Good afternoon,
I would like to offer you an opportunity to become part of the America Counts (AC) pilot program here at CMU. During this past summer the CMU Volunteer Center was awarded a Venture Grant through Michigan Campus Compact to bring a new math tutoring program to local schools. After formatting the program this semester we are ready for students to apply to became an AC tutor.
America Counts is a federally funded work-study tutoring program. Which means two things: 1) it is a paid position through work-study funds and 2) you will get a wealth of experiences teaching students that are in need of extra-assistance. In the spring, the pilot program is being implemented at Pullen Elementary, a K-3 school. Each tutor will be paired up with 1 or 2 teachers and will help the teacher during their Math Intervention period. The tutors will go through training at the beginning of the spring semester and will be paired up with a classroom teacher. As tutors skills improve in the classroom the tutors will be given the special opportunity to develop "math centers" for the students they work with. "Math centers" are a lesson or activity designed by the tutor for the students in conjunction with state standards. They provide tutors a creative outlet to meet the needs of students who are struggling.
We are currently looking to hire in a few tutors to be trailblazers for the CMU AC program if you are interested in this, please fill out the application at: https://orgsync.com/38315/forms/show/40884. This application will be available from 11/23/11 until 12/1/11 at 11:00 pm.
Warmly,Thomas Trenkamp

11-08-2011: Bone Marrow Testing Drive
A bone marrow transplant can work wonders for a Leukemia patient, and there are over 10,000 others a year who are still looking for the perfect match. Michigan Service Scholars will be registering people for the national registry tomorrow, November 8th from 11-5 in the Rotunda in the University Center. Most people don't know the facts of donating, like that 70% of Bone Marrow donations don't involve surgery. Getting on the registry only takes 10 minutes and a cheek swab, and the trade off is that you could actually save someone's life. Even if you aren't ready to register, just drop by to learn more about what you can do.

04-19-2011: Softball Tournament to Support Japan
The Smitty Softball Tournament will be held April 30th- May 1st, with Men’s and CoRec divisions available. Cost will be $30 per team, and registration opens up Monday April 11th. RSVP now via facebook, and share the link with others!
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=181166328596799Both tournaments are open to students, faculty, staff, alumni and the public.
The Smitty sporting events were started in Spring 2009 as fundraisers to establish The LaMott Smith Award, a scholarship given annually to a student pursuing a sport-related major. LaMott was a CMU student, PEK member, and URec employee who passed away in May 2008 due to bacterial meningitis. He had a great personality, was very active in Intramural Sports, and would talk to anyone who walked into the SAC. Establishing this scholarship and hosting these events are ways we can always remember him. This year, a portion of the funds raised through the Smitty events will also benefit disaster relief efforts in Japan.

03-01-2011: Valentines For Veterans
Valentines for Veterans Program brings Happiness to Local Veterans
The Volunteer Center has completed another successful year with their Valentines for Veterans program. By collaborating with hundreds of CMU students, as well as CMU faculty, staff, Dow Chemical employees, and elementary school students, they were able to make over 1,000 cards for Veterans across the state of Michigan. Cards were delivered to Veteran’s Medical Centers in Ann Arbor, Detroit, Battle Creek, Iron Mountain, and Saginaw. They contained messages such as “Thank you for your service”, “We Appreciate You”, and “Have a Wonderful Day”. Some students even volunteered to hand deliver the cards. Transfer student Katelynd Nadolski from Fraser, MI stated “It was really great being able to see their faces light up when we brought them the cards. I’m glad I was able to be a part of that”.
